More frustration!

Can someone throw any light on this? Frequently while browsing, my PC will start behaving erratically. When trying to open a file or folder, the window appears blank white - no text or graphics.
It is accompanied by high fan speed. I thought it may be due to overheating, but after allowing it to cool, it still occurs. The only solution seems to be to re start the PC. Any ideas? Thanks.

It`s a HP Compaq F700 presario (Vista), 4yo, AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core, 2gb mem, 174gb hd, 107gb free.
