Outlook Express ping keeps going off

For only the second time the OE ping has been sounding over and over again every so often all day, not the message one but the compacting one, although I compacted this week and the icon isn't coming up. I've checked and there are no odd processes running and last time it stopped on its own, but wondering what is causing it and if I can stop it directly as it's not actually time to compact and only pings once when it is, this goes on and on.
