Hi, can anyone recommend a free program where I can monitor my monthly download quota so I don't go over and get charged extra from BT. I used to use theirs but for some reason they have shut it down...I wonder why. Cheers.

There are loads of free programs which will do the job. This is probably the most frequently recommended:

Last time I rang BT about something they gave me free unlimited downloads without me even asking.................
Oops!

Wrong link!
(although there's nothing wrong with the program I inadvertently linked to)

It should have been this:

I'm with bt and just checked my usage ,I just went to my bt where you can check your phone usage and then to my services
BT hasn't done away with it's Broadband usage meter; but I think it has been made more difficult to access.

No problem if (as I do) you pay your bill by 'Direct Debit' and are registered for viewing your account 'on line'.

If you wish to proceed along the lines which I have adopted, have a look at the following:-

I don't pay direct debit and don't remember registering for anything and I'm on option 1 the lowest I just went to My bt and clicked onto services
bentaxle.....In view of what you have said, I think moonraker should 'pump-in'...MY BT and see what he can establish from it.

Originally I registered with MY BT and, apart from my now being on Direct Debit, my initial registration and password are still active.

Nothing is easy with bt Viv

Thanks all, I have tried the BT page again but am still getting the same message, "The usage monitor is currently undergoing maintenance. Please try again later". This has been like this for many months now.
All rather strange. I have just this moment checked my usage and, whilst I am allocated 10GB per month, up until 23.59 last night, I have only used 1.8.

Personally, I would be e/mailing BT on the matter.:-

Moonraker, If you Google for BITMETER and install it, it will give you upload and download Internet usage for daily or weekly totals.
Wak....Bitmeter tells you the speeds of your broadband connection; whereas the OP wants to know the usage of his monthly quota. He is concerned that he may incur a further charge, which I don't think is excessive, of £5 per 5GB, if he exceeds his allocation.

Anyway if one wishes to check Broadband speeds, I would be suggesting:-

Thinkbroadband (www.thinkbroadband.com) does exactly what you want. It gives a running daily and monthly download (and upload) total and much more besides.
How does a third party website tell you what your broadband usage is?
Erm, don't know, Chuck!

All I know is that when I hover my mouse over the TBB icon it shows (for example) "Today down 66MB, Up 6.4MB" and "Month to date - Used 12.330GB"

Isn't this the sort of info that Moonie wants to know?
Ah right, I understand now, they provide a usage meter tool you install on your computer.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html

These tools are fine if you only have one device in the house that uses the internet (including phones, internet enabled TV ect) if you have more than one device then the providers website, or possibly your router logs are the only way to do it reliably.

(not all routers will provide the information on usage)
Very sorry to argue, Ron, but I've switched the Bitmeter program on for a short while and it tells my I've used 39.22Mb DL and 5.68Mb UL.
I've also checked my speed on a web site which indicates 26.3Mbps DL and 1.827Mbps UL.
Bitmeter also gives/stores daily, weekly and monthly totals
Wak....You are Not arguing with me, but have drawn my attention to an oversight on my part. Bitmeter does also provide a 'read-out' of usage but, in view of what Chuck has said, I would question the accuracy of the information.

As the OP is with BT and appears unable to access its 'Broadband Usage Meter, I would suggest that he forgets about usage until BT informs him that he has used 80% of his monthly allocation; and even then ignore the fact. BT does not raise a charge for over usage on the first month one goes over the authorised limit.
