Email Question
12 Answers
We run a small community centre and currently BT supply the phone and broadband. They consider it to be a 'business' therefore we have to have a 'business package' for phone and broadband. The majority of the monthly cost is for broadband that we don't use so we are thinking of ditching the internet' leaving us with just the phone line (would get rid of that as well but need it for the alarm!!) My question is - would I still be able to access the BT email address if we ditch the BT broadband?

Go to http://uk.yahoo.com and sign in with the email address and the usual password for that account. However there is a possibility that once you stop paying for the connection, the email account will cease to be accessible too.

"The Internet" is more than just "the World Wide Web". "The Internet" includes your email. If you got rid of broadband (i.e. "ditching the internet") you would not only lose your email address, you'd lose the ability to pick up any email from anybody.
Of course, you could replace broadband with something else such as a pay-as-you-go mobile data service. This could work out cheaper if you only had low data requirements.

Alternatively could you meke more use of the internet connection in the community centre? eg charge people to use the wifi when they drop in for an activity? You'd need to get someone to set up password protections and time outs but it would be a positive way forward and a bit of a fundraiser.
Seems a shame to ditch the internet in this day and age.

Not sure about BT but some ISPs are allowing you to retain your webmail account after severing their service. maybe limiting the attachment size.
The benefit for them is obvious. The first time you have a problem with your new service you'll be tempted to go back to the old one.
Whatever, recipients of your mail will get your mail with your old email address so this alone is a valuable avenue of advertising.
