just got one with green red blue which go were yellow red white on tv

The connections on the TV should be coloured as well. yellow white & red

That's not a VGA cable. you have a component video cable with no audio.

You can use it perfectly happily as a composite video cable with audio (the yellow, white and red one)... just plug the same colour into each end.
Ah.... My answer assumed you where doing composite to composite.... VGA to composite won't work at all.
If this is a normal composite cable and you want to join Y,W and R sockets you can use the cable, just make sure you use the same one to the same colour; green plug to the yellow on each end etc.

If you only have a VGA socket to capture the signal you need something like this.

and just ignore the s-video plug. You can not use a VGA to composite cable as the wiring is different in the vga plug.
