(In later versions on Windows, MS chose to hide these extensions to the PC owner by default, presumably for a laugh, so it's possible you won't see them.) You could try a few things. Maybe best option might be to open whatever application you normally view picture files with and instruct it to open one of the recovered files. Maybe it will recognise it and tell you what sort of file it is; allowing you to rename the file correctly.
Of course the less welcome possibilty might be that the recovered files are corrupted, and the pictures lost anyway.

Hetman File Recovery is designed so that it does not alter the contents of the drive being searched. This way you can evaluate the software with confidence and determine if your files can be recovered. Our aim is to provide you with absolute confidence that your data can be recovered before you purchase a license key to save your files.
Most file recovery solutions can restore files as long as the lost files have not been written over. However, not all software can recover lost files from all types of disk damage or is compatible with more than a few specific file types. Hetman File Recovery can recover files from deleted or reformatted partitions, from an emptied recycle bin and it can recover deleted files. It can also perform what is called "deferred recovery," which is the ability to create a disk image of a damaged disk and then use that image for file restoration. The disk-imaging tool can create disk images for data backup purposes as well. A disk image is an exact copy of a disk, rather than simply copies of the individual files and folders contained on the disk like most backup solutions.
To help you find the file versions you desire to recover, this software provides a preview option. Using the preview option, you can attempt to view the file before you restore it. You can also sort by date, file size, file type or advanced options. Once you find the files you want to recover, you can restore them to any accessible drive. Keep in mind that you never want to restore files to a damaged disk. Restoring files to a damaged disk may write the restored files over files you may want to recover, which will make them impossible to retrieve.
Hetman File Recovery is an easy-to-use data recovery software designed to restore files accidentally deleted from hard disks and memory cards. The program can recover files damaged by virus attacks, power failures and software faults or files from deleted and formatted partitions. If some program does not use Recycle Bin when deleting files, Handy Recovery can restore such files. It can also recover files moved to Recycle Bin after it has been emptied.
You can also restore the full branch of folders tree containing selected files and folders. Along with the main file data, the program can recover alternate data streams, which are used on NTFS file system to store additional information about files.
