Recognize A Blank Cd?

How do I get my CD Drive to recognize a blank CD? I have tried updating the drivers but the wizard says 'cannot continue the hardware update'

If it's not the drivers then what can I do to make my PC recognize a blank CD?

some comps (older ones ) either play cd's - or + but not both
