Powerline Ethernet Adaptors

I run a couple of these which works well for my xbox downstairs.

I got hold of a cheap xbox for Booldawg jnr and bought another adaptor off amazon so she could game online.

This new adaptor doesnt work with my existing adaptors. The only issue I can see is that my old adaptors are 85mbps and this new one is 200mpbs.

I have the original 85mpbs unit plugged into the router and ran my xbox off an identical adaptor - which works. Do these apadtor only work with identical models/speed? I thought the 200mpbs would just run at whatever speed it was given from the router.

Are they from the same manufacturer? Different brands use different technologies and frequently aren't compatible with each other:

they are both from the same manufacturer; tp link. I bought the original pair back in 2010.

I notice the new 200mb one has a 'pair' button, but the 85mb ones dont.

I'm pretty sure that they all need to be the same 'speed' - ie 200mbps are not backwards compatible with 85mbps.

The new one I bought is:
TP-Link TL-PA211 AV200 Nano 200Mbps

The old pair are:
TP-Link TL-PA101 85MBPS

I'm guessing that the devices might have different passwords. Have you tried installing, and using the Management Utility?

yes i did install the software but it didnt pick up any devices. I may try the new unit first in the chain (ie nearest the router) and then see if any of my old 85mb units work.

It won't make any difference what order you put them in... they don't know where they are.

I plugged the new unit nearest to the router and the software did pick it up - which it wasnt doing when I had it further down the chain. But it still wont talk to on of the older units.

I've discovered both the older units arent the same make/model but work together.

They generally work on a peer-to-peer principle i.e they only talk to one other device. You would therefore need 2 new adaptors to set up a new connection to an additional device. One connected to a spare port on your router and the other to the end device. Think of it as a network cable connection but with these adaptors in the way.

Home Plugs, 85MBps won't 'talk' to 200Mbps. i.e. not compatible.

thanks all, googling around there seems to be compatbility issues.

well I got them less than 7 days ago so I can return then without too much hassle.
