You can type new names in the 1st row the ABC etc doesnt print , you can highlight them if you like to make them stand out
add the colour by fill tool on ribbon

Thanks Nanny. I was hoping to be able to see the headings when I get down the page a fair way. If I can't make A, B, C work, then can I split the screen and if so, how? Thanks.
Click on a cell beneath your headings, the go to Windows..........Freeze pane
Go into view and click on headings then help - dont know what excel you have but this looks like what you are after
If you click on a cell below your headings then go to Window - Freeze Pane when you go down your spreadsheet the headings will remain visible.

Hi crafty, I can't see where the option Freeze pane is?
If you click on the Window tab it should be in the drop-down options....
When in Excel, in your worksheet : go to VIEW - then you will see freeze panes. You have a choice of 3 - the middle one is the one you want :-)
having said that there are different versions of excel with the options in different places.... so good luck x
Are sure you are lookng at the whole list under windows? If there is an arrow at the bottom there may be more options underneath?

Sorry if you already know this...

Hi I don't seem to have a window tab or a view tab. I think it is Excel Starter.
That's different to mine then tenrec.............go to help and put in freeze pane.
Apparently Starter dopesn't have the option but here is a way round it here

Thank you for all your advice and help. I don't know how this happened, (bear with me!) I have Excel 2003 on a PC and I have Excel starter on here (my lappy). If I do as you say on the PC can I then copy one file to this lappy and will it keep the freeze pane function? Hope this makes some sense.
According to the link no, Starter won't support the function

Thanks Chelle. Will go and make a drink and have a think what to do next!
Thank you all for your help.
I think you can, the link says that you cannot unfreeze in excel starter, but you can use the worksheet.
Ah yes my mistake, sorry tenrec....
You can't re-label the actual column headings. The only way you can change the A, B, C... is to go into the Tools Menu, select Options, click on the General Tab at the top, then put a tick into the box named R1C1 Reference Style. But this'll only change the A, B, C... to 1, 2, 3...

And I guess this isn't what you want to do.

As others have said, you can't do it in Starter, see this link from Microsoft:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/starter-help/excel-features-that-are-not-fully-supported-in-excel-starter-HA010374501.aspx

But wouldn't you be safe to install the version of Office you have on your desktop onto your laptop? Do you still have the disks?
