Accessing Internet

My computer (Compac presario) is now a few years old (a bit like me) and on XP. For the past six days everytime I try to fire it up it can't find the server. I have to pull out and then put back the modum,then to get on takes about 4 minutes. Any simple ideas to sort it please as it's getting a bit boring! Thanks, John.

When the modem is going, wriggle the wires to see if any of the plugs/connections are lose and you get disconnected.
Some modems are better than others. I've been told that a modem can not wear out, it either goes or it is broken, but when I last changed modems, connection problems became a problem of the past.

Is it possible to borrow another modem from someone to see if it really is the modem, or maybe your server or cable.
