Lost Contacts On Iphone 3

My iPhone lost all my contacts. It transpires that they haven't been being backed up either- as 'contacts' on my iCloud was switched to OFF. I did the synch to SIM but only got a very old version of contacts with hardly any listed. Am I right in thinking that I can do no more?
I've now synched up to www.icloud.com and merged my photos from my phone, BUT now on my phone I appear to have all 'My Pictures' from my computer too! I don't really want all these on my phone. Any help gratefully recieved!

I know hardly anything about iPhones, so I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "I did the synch to SIM". Is that the same as using an iTunes backup? If not,try connecting your phone to your computer, opening iTunes, clicking the Devices tab, right-clicking on your phone and selecting 'Restore from backup. (That, of course, assumes that a backup file is actually available).
