Finding The Centre Of A Plate

I need t find the centre of some plates (ceramic) in order to make cake stands. So far I have found the centre by making a round paper circle and drawing a square around it. However. I find that because the plates are not FLAT, I'm not getting it exact when I lay the paper on to the plate to mark it. I'm no good at working things like this out and I'd appreciate your help. Thank you.

Draw round the plate, and cut out the circle.

Fold the circle in half, and then in quarters.

You will end up with a quarter circle, and the folds will meet in the middle.

Or ... The bottom of the plate, which will be flat in the middle ...

Rub a pencil around the ridge on the bottom, and press that on to a sheet of paper so you get a circle the size of the flat bit.

Cut that out, and then you are only pressing your template on to the flat bit of the plate.
