Do Downlaodable Computer Fix Programs Work Properly?

The reason I ask this, is that I am worried that documents I am currently working upon will be purged if I run a program to fix freezing and crashes on my laptop: I do a lot of writing, and am currently proofing my first book while, also, working on three more books. The program I have looked at says that it will purge the computer of junk files, will it see my documents as junk files and so delete them? So, do computer fix programs work without deleting files I have created?

General comment: Once the laptop goes unstable it is madness to try to install new software or to attempt major clean-up tasks. Just concentrate 100% on getting help to save your files. There are many-too-many shark sites which will offer to fix any computer problem. In general stick to the professionals and make it 100% clear what you want the computer to do....

This is why I ask, it should read, "downloadable", of course, but my laptop is often too slow for my writing.

Depends on the programme. Are you thinking of using a well known reputable one ? If concerned always back up before trying anything.

Pretty much without exception any "pc repair" or "PC Cleanup" you download from anywhere is total crap and is far more likely to cause more problems than it's likely to solve.

You could reinstall the operating system.

Again back things up first.

If it is something that has only occurred recently you could always try restoring the system from a bcakup for an earlier date.

You can get a portable Hard drive with enough capacity to store the mythical output of monkeys with typwriters for under £50, just save all your files onto it even if you don't do a full backup. Mine has saved me twice after serious problems. If you are only saving text then a USB memory stick will do.

No doubt there are detailed instructions on the Net. It'd involve wiping the drive and reinstalling from the installation disk; then restoring all your backed up documents.

Personally, I like to do a full format when I have these problems, it takes a while but it is well worth it, PC runs like new again!!

I have vista windows 7. But it was just a question about if fix programs working properly and not touching my own files in documents. It goes without saying, of course, that I have back-up files for all my books. Perhaps I should add that whether I have updates from microsoft installing automatically or not, this will cause my laptop to freeze - it is but one of the causes, but causes me the most frustration, as the freeze indicates, in this instance, that an update is becoming available for install (automatic or not), and usually comes in the middle of a 5000 word stint.

A simple yes or no would have sufficed. But, I suppose, one cannot get that when talking about computers. What a shame.
