Although I 've computers for many years I have never seen the point of using a browser. Whenever I switch on I go straight to Google to find what I want, so what is the point of browsers.

When I open my browser it automatically opens 7 tabs including Answerbank, a news site, my webmail, my own forum, Twitter AND a google search box :)

Errm!

Well you couldn't have posted this question without using a browser.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser
Google is just a website, you are using a web browser to view it - if you are using Windows then Internet Explorer is usually set as the default web browser. A browser is just a program and you can install whichever other one you want e.g. Chrome or Firefox.

My point is why bother with the browser , whichever is the default one, but rather go straight to say Google ?
Because you cant access Google without a browser, Google is just a website that you cannot access without using a browser to get to it.
>>>Whenever I switch on I go straight to Google to find what I want

But what do you use to GO to Google?

You must be displaying Google inside something, and that will be a browser
Question Author
I have the Google icon on my desktop and as soon as the desktop comes up I just click on the Google icon.
That icon is just a shortcut to the Google webpage and the default browser on your computer is run in order to display it.

It doesn't matter what other apps I'm using, I can go directly into Google within seconds.
Do you have a "help" button at the top of your Google page. If so, click it and it will tell you what browser you are using.
I give up.....
Alternatively, press "Alt" then "h" at the same time and this will tell you also.
I, for one , agree with modeller.....
(Anyone can be deliberately obtuse if they want to be).
YOu have to have a browser behind the scenes to make Google searches work.
Question Author
Yes I know that but why should I bother with the browser at all , if I can go straight to Google. I don't even need to have the browser on the desktop at all.
I may be missing something somewhere but for the moment I'm at a loss
to understand why I need to use the browser at all . It does its job automatically when I boot up . I don't need to do anything . As I said earlier whatever I am doing I can access Google within seconds.
What happens when you do the "Alt" with "h" I suggested?
Google only appears BECAUSE you are using a browser, without it, NO GOOGLE!
Is this like saying why use a satellite dish/aerial because my sky channel/BBC1 comes on when I switch the TV on?
G. I just did it and I got internet 'Explorer Help'
or rather 'Internet Explore' help
G. I just did it and I got internet 'Explorer Help'
Then you are using Internet Explorer as your browser.
