As Epona has stated, using 'Save as', rather than 'Save' allows you to select 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP' as the file type. However you can change the OpenOffice settings to make that file type the default, slo that simply clicking 'Save' will use your chosen format. See here for instructions :...

When you go to save the document choose the 'Save As' rather than Save optin. it should then show you all the option you have, choose 'Save as Word document' and it should save as this. You should be able to go into the settings and make save as Word your Default. this link may help http:// coe.unm .edu/up loads/d ocs/coe -main/t utorial s/file- migrati on.pdf
What's the file extension your saving. If it's .odt then its Open Office default setting. If it's .doc Then it's MS Word.
As Sharingan suggests do a 'save as' and specify a .doc file extension.
If it continues to open in Open Office with a file extension in .doc format, then you may need to change your file associations.

I doubt very much that it saves it in Open Office format. Much more likely is that you've got Open Office set as the defualt for opening Word documents, so once you've saved it, if you double-click it will open if OE instead of Word.
All you need to do is right-click a document that you've saved, choose "Open with" then "Choose default program" and select Word. After that, Word docs will always open in Word.
But if you hate Open Office with a passion, why don't you just uninstall it?

If you really don't like OpenOffice, try LibreOffice instead. (It's derived from the source code for Lotus, which was the main commercial rival to Microsoft Office until it was placed into the public domain):

Oh Kevink, thanks so much.
That is the answer, as I only have this Word Starter 2010 thing I can right click and open as "Microsoft Client Virtualisation Handler' and that opens it as a word document.
I don't want to uninstall OO as I do use it for a few things but I can't get to grips with it like the old Word package however for the little I use it I can't justify buying it and this little starter does well if I can reopen it in the same format.
I'm drying my tears and having a Southern Comfort and Coke to celebrate!!
Thanks again x
