I've just bought my first laptop as my pc is ready to give up the ghost. Should I buy a heat absorbing mat to sit it on? I know they can get quite warm underneath and I'm not sure if it would damage table surface? I should imagine you would use one if you were to use it on your lap to.

I've just re-positioned my laptop from reading this. I've never really thought about why it gets so hot, I just presumed it was because it is on for so long each day.
I have one of these with a little fan. Been going two years every day.

our office 'techie' claims that jiggling them about when they are busy, can cause damage to the hard drive and shorten its life

i don't know if this is true or whether he just wants to stop us swinging them from room to room
Zeuhl....If your office 'techie' is saying Not to move Lappies when they are are switched on and in use, then he/she is giving good advice.

Another point to consider is that using a cooler mat with an in-built fan will put less work upon laptop fans but not necessarily keep the laptop any cooler; but may assist with extending the battery life.

I have one of the stands Yorky Lass links to from Poundland. It's ideal. My laptop is on from morning to night and the exhausted air is always cool.

Thanks to all who responded. I wasn't notified by AB that I had any responses! I just happened to pop in and check.

I ended up staying on the safe side and buying a Targus 'chill mat' from ebay. Stephen G had recommended the exact one in his post - spooky! I only paid £10 (inc delivery) for it on Ebay though!
Hi Miz....It's my guess that if you didn't have any notification from AB about replies, it was because you had not pressed the 'subscribe' button in the box where you entered your question.
