I've re-installed firefox and this is the version it says it is but now my adblocker has stopped working and i'm inundated with flashing ads, which adblocker works with this firefox version? Or can i go back to an earlier version of firefox, i can't manage with all this flashing on the screen it's sickening

That's strange Dot. A very old version of Firefox. Mine is up-to-date and is version 23.l0.1.

Mine is 23.0.1 also and I'm using Adblocker with no problems.

If you want to not be bothered about add-on compatibility then use

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/checkcompatibility/

With that installed the browser can check version numbers as much as it wants but they will all still be active. Of course, if an add-on no longer works properly with the new browser version you might have problems but, other than occasionally an add-on no longer functioning, that hasn't happened to me (as far as I have been aware).

A quick way to get the latest version is to go to About Firefox in the Help menu and that pop-up includes a button to check for updates.
