Where does Word documents go when saved in Windows 8.1......Certainly not in My Documents as was the case in previous XP or Win7 etc

Should be in Documents.
Create a new one with a distinctive title - rhubarb or whatever. Save it and then search for it. You'll see where they go on your pc then.
