Searching why my computer is very slow, noticed that 14 items were ticked/active in msconfig startup. Spent ages finding out what each one was. Removed ticks against unnecessary progs. Restarted computer and guess what - yep all the ticks are back.
Download from filehippo.com free software call ccleaner its under popular software top of page. Run it and it will remove items not required and free up speed of you computer. Great free software.
Some things check if they ate in start-up when they run and put themselves back there if they aren't there. You may be able to change settings in the applications concerned, or if not, maybe uninstall them ? I'm assuming none of them are malware ?
Thanks for the tip Old_Geezer.
I just used ccleaner and it certainly cleared out a load of rubbish. But the ticks still remain in startup System Configuration Utility. They do not appear to be slowing anything down so will now leave well alone. Strange things these PCs.
That's your answer then, click selective startup and restart, you'll get a msg when the system comes up again which if memory servers you can just answer yes to and from then on your un-ticked items won't start at reboot
Sorry, George, I completely misread your post.
It's tricky to know what you can safely disable.
Take a screen shot of your start up and maybe we can help you.
The golden rule is NEVER disable anything you are unsure of.
