Which Security "suite" Would You Choose

Am still plagued with a problem on my home PC. It's an ageing Dell E520, running Vista home basic. I think the problem is on one of my back up drives.

Running Malware anti-virus, but have Microsoft Security Suite as firewall etc. Have run a quick [Malware] scan on the whole system and nothing found. A full scan on the system [excluding the problematic J drive] took only 2.5 hours. A full scan on just the J Drive lasted over 18 hours and still hadn't finished. I've run the scan either in safe mode & no internet connection and in normal mode [had to stop that after 58 hours] . I've even downloaded the chamaeleon option. I had freed up a load of old memory on the J drive and disabled the 'archives' option. This still hasn't solved the problem. Can I just disconnect the J drive, have a full back up on other drive. Which security suite would be best? as Msoft is leting stuff get through.

I use the free to download Avast and find it perfectly satisfactory

I have used the free MSE now for a few years without a hitch. if you are having problems with viruses getting past your defences, maybe you need to be looking at whether you are visiting high risk sites and what you are downloading and from where.

is it just yourself using the PC.? also if you are not a little knowledgeable about these things you could actually be authorising these viruses when downloading other things from unscrupulous web sites.

The only time I have got viruses on my PC is when using Chrome, each and every time I use Chrome on any machine I get a virus.

Some inconsistencies here need clarification.

1) Malware Bytes is not anti virus software. Unless you purchased the full version it only runs on demand ie, it doesn't run all the time.

2) Your ordinary Windows Vista firewall is sufficient. Microsoft Security Suite, do you mean Microsoft Security Essentials and do you keep it up to date? This is anti virus and should run all the time.

3) Chameleon Option, whats this? As far as I came see this is a multi boot logger for pc's with multiple operating systems.

4) If J drive is connected by usb then obviously you can just unplug it and not use it. If you want to re-use it you can try to reformat the drive, but that will erase anything on it.

5) Vista Home Basic, is this 32bit or 64 bit? Does sometimes cause grief.

Microsoft Security Essentials works ok, but you must keep it up to date. I've been using it for some time without problems.

I've lost all faith in MSE, [as I think have Computer Active Mag]. Virgin Media - my provider - have given users F-Secure, which has identified 4 infected files, on my back up drive. which are proving difficult to remove [they are looking into it for me]. And yes, I have the full paid up version of Malware.
