Netbook In Plane Hold Baggage

Can I put my netbook in the hold luggage or would they need to open the case to check it.I know it is advisable to put in carry on baggage...but just asking.

But I wouldn't ... theft and/or damage are all too common.

I wouldn't put it in the hold luggage, I don't trust that my bag wouldn't be opened and had a look through. Best to keep it with you in the cabin.
