Sky Broadband Speed
2 Answers
Any ideas Guys cos Sky can't help. I have been chasing up to get my speed increased and they say I am receiving a download speed of 3.3Mb according to their tests. I should be able to see their report by entering 192.168.0.1 in my address bar. By doing so I get the facility to enter admin / sky as required to log-in but that's as far as I can get on my Samsung laptop (my default device) running Windows 8.1 The little circle keeps rotating but gets no further. However, starting up my old Travel Asus laptop running XP Pro, I get the Sky chart immediately. Any ideas please? As I say, the Sky Tech had no ideas. Thanks. Tel

Ensure that you're laptop is connected to your router with an ethernet cable (not wirelessly) and that nothing else [such as a smart TV or games console] is using your internet connection. Then run the test here:
http:// www.spe edtest. net/
Repeat here:
http:// www.bbc .co.uk/ iplayer /diagno stics
Then try both again with your laptop connected wirelessly. (If there's a significant difference you'll need to change its channel).
If your figures are very different to Sky's you should challenge them about it. Also, assuming that your connection is via conventional copper cables in your phone line (which is what a speed of 3.3Mbps suggests anyway), ask Sky which type of broadband they're supplying to you. The basic service that BT Wholesale sells to other ISPs is 'ADSL Max', so that's probably what you've got. But a decent ISP should, possibly after a bit of hassling from you, be able to get that upgraded to 'ADSL 2+', which roughly doubles the available speed.

Hi Buenchico, Thank you for you assistance. The two tests I have carried give the following results. Speedtest via ethernet :- Download 2.70 Mbs / Up .67 Mbs & BBC via ethernet :- Download 2.69 Mbs ( almost identical )
Speedtest via Wireless :- Download 2.65 Mbs / Up .68 Mbs
& BBC :- Download 2.74 Mbs.
I will find out more about what they are supplying me with as I see TV HD requires a minimum of 3.5 Mbs according to the BBC site you gave me.
Also Buenchico, I still dont know why I can download their Speed results via 192.164.0.1 on an old Asus laptop running XP but not on my new Samsung running Windows 8.1. Any further help will be much appreciated. Telboy
