New Nokia Lumia 520

I have just got a new Nokia Lumia 520 mobile and I have inserted the sim card but I am not getting any service, I have checked I have inserted the sim correctly and it is still saying no service. I have set-up the wi-fi and that is working great but I cannot make calls.
Can anyone advise me and tell me what is wrong and how to fix this?

Have you activated the sim? I can't remember now whether you have to ring up or whether it activates itself within a few hours. I remember having to turn my phone off and on again to get it started.

It said insert the sim and you are ready to go, no mention about calling network, does it take a few hours for the sim to activate its self?

Yes. It can take a couple of hours we were told, but it didn't take that long. Have you switched off and on?
