updating video driver...deleting old video driver question

Want to update the driver for my nvidia geforce Ti 4200 as it's the original driver that came with the pc and it's over 3 years old now.. The nvidia site says you must remove the old driver first.

 

Now this may sound like a daft question but if I remove the old driver won't that make the video card unusable (or would that only be after a restart)?

Also if there are problems installing the new driver is there any way of reverting back to the old driver if they've been deleted?

Would system restore be able to restore them? But then if the drivers wern't there or corrupted how would I see the screen anyway?

Removing the driver will only remove the super-duper functionality from the video card. You will still be able to use it in low-resolution low-colour mode.

Think about it, as soon as you switch your PC on you can see stuff, but the drivers haven't had a chance to load yet.

Nvidia is a decent name so if you download their official drivers you should be fine. Even if the new driver dosn't work, for whatever reason, you'll still have a basic display to work with while sorting it out.

Hammer is right, Windows has some basic 256 colour drivers that it uses as a default in the abscence of specific ones for your graphics card.
I would certainly recommend updating your drivers, especially as your card is getting on a bit now and any free improvement in frame rates can only be a bonus.
Why not try www.omegadrivers.net/ for an unofficial release of the latest Nvidia and ATI drivers, they usually manage to eak out even more performance.
