Being Directed To Us Sites

I have a HP laptop -( bit fancy for me btw) it has windows 8.1 - I use firefox and google chrome for browsing. In very simple terms what must I do to stop being directed to US sites. I always put UK sites only but that seems to make no difference. Thank you (oh and I did do a search on AB as I'm sure this has come up before but couldn't find any questions and answers) Thank you

How are you searching for sites? Are you actually going to Google UK ( https://www.google.co.uk ) or are you, for example, simply putting your search terms in the address bar of your browser (or using Google.com)?

Have you tried a UK-based browser, such as Mojeek:

I was just typing in what I wanted to know in the little box thingie - so I will copy and paste your google link and try that.
I've never heard of the other search engine you mentioned - as you recommend it I assume it's efficient and safe?

I find most threads interesting and often a huge learning curve for me HansU especially anything to do with computers and the internet.
