When I sell an item on Ebay I have the option of using a limited (4?) number of fonts and changing the font size only in the text.
Can anyone tell me how to use colour, put photos in boxes, and generally use all the whistles and bells in the text please.
What do you mean about 'photos in boxes? You can only display your items using different templates if you have a shop. Changing the colour in the text description is easy just highlight it and use the colour box to the front of the font box (don't think you mean this though do you?) Do you sell a lot? getting a shop is cheap and my sales went up about 400% when I changed to an Ebay shop.
This isn't my area of expertise but I note that, doing things the way shown in this video, there are formatting options (such as font, size & colour) for the text, shown above the box for the item description. Perhaps that might help?
Where I have been going wrong is by not clicking on the "advanced tool" tab. I have been selling on the "basic tab for idiots" or whatever it is called, which only offers 4 fonts and a change of font size.
Sorted!
Mrs O - it costs £20 a month and for that you get a shop, dedicated shop name and 200 free buy it now inserts a month. Auction costs are not free and start at 10p. You can open a basic shop as a private seller as long as you have a PayPal account.

Mrs O -do you sell on Etsy? If you sell 'crafty' things or something a bit different its good for that. I put my more unusual stuff or things I think the USA market will go for on there . People tend to pay more for stuff on Etsy.
Additionally, here in the U.S. having a "store" (there are certain levels, the basic is $15 monthly) allows free photos (up to 12 per listing) and other perks including monthly news letters on how to sell better and produce more eye-catching displays...
