Is it possible to create your own folder icons on Windows Vista/7? I realise you can change a folder icon via right click > properties but this only points to a selection provided by Microsoft.
For example, I have a dashcam and like to keep the last month’s video “just in case”. I keep it in a folder called “dashcam” and would like to create an icon for the folder, perhaps a car, to make it easy to identify. Is there any way of doing this?

OK got a bit offtrack there. You need to create an icon (.ico) file. http://www.rw-designer.com/image-to-icon

On the Properties dialog, is there not a button called labelled "Choose File" or similar?
This allows you to choose a different image file to represent the folder.

TheChair - thanks. I'm aware of that but what I'm looking for is a way to CREATE the image I want to use, rather than choose one from a selection provided by Microsoft.

Why not go for some ready prepared ones?

If you want to make your own then you need to create them as .png files using a 'paint' program.

That's a good link SlackAlice (thanks) but folders don't seem to want png files. When I do properties> customise > change icon it won't accept png.
