Missing Sub Titles

I downloaded a Spanish movie with English sub titles.I can watch it and see the sub titles on my computer using VLC media player but when I transfer it to a memory stick or a blank DVD to watch on my TV the subtitles don't show?
It's nothing to do with the picture size etc. The subs are not there.
Any help welcomed
