I have come into this a bit late but I don't think iphones need to updated at all. My iphone 4 is currently up-to-date and is on 7.1.2.

My phone works perfectly unless someone with an iphone rings it. Then I have to take out the battery to reset it :-)

It is not compulsary to update, but iOS 9 has better performance than iOS8.

As a rule, it is always better to have the most up to date Operating System. However, for very old iPhones, the old processors might struggle with the new software and actually slow your phone down.

When posting such a question, it is a good idea to state what model you have, and what software you are currently using.

IOS 7 was a complete rewrite of the iPhone software and was a bit rushed. As a consequence, it was considered not fully done, and iOS 8 sorted out a lot of iOS7 shortcomings.

Updates are free, and improve perforance and sometimes add extra functionality. I don't understand why people don't bother to update.

Gromit...when I ask my iphone 4 if it needs to update from 7.1.2, its says that it is already up to date. Perhaps IOS 8 was meant for later versions of the iphone ?

You are right Mikey, Ios8 starts with the 4S iPhone. So yours is up to date with Ios7

Hasty updates almost always cause issues with certain apps. As this one has done, just like all the others. I would never update my OS until several months after it came out, unless there was some piece of software that only worked with it (which would be unlikely for a while)

Thanks Milvus....so my trusty Iphone 4 is OK...what a relief ! Along with my little Willy, its the thing I would grab when fleeing my house if it caught fire !

I have had mine for about 5 years now ( I think ! ) and it does everything I ask of it, without any fuss or bother. Not sure how I would manage without it to be honest !
