Many thanks Buenchico, as a result of your answer I have managed to start in safe mode run a virus check and get rid of the virus.
'Tis always useful knowing how to access Safe Mode. But it is worth having a USB-Diskette (which is usually a USB flash drive) or CD/DVD with which your laptop can start to a Unix OS. Then start the virus-killer! A variety of tools are usually available: for instance, a means of managing partitions - handy if space is getting critical on your Win XP system partition.
