Rtf Or Odf In Open Office Writer. Which One?

I received the following message as I went to save a document in Open Office Writer:

"This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the Rich Text Format file format. Do you want to save the document in this format anyway?

Use the latest ODF file format and be sure all formatting and content are saved correctly."

I was then given a couple of buttons to choose from; the RTF or the ODF. It seems obvious that I should choose the ODF, but what's the difference? Is ODF merely an update of RTF? This sort of thing really isn't my subject

ODF is explained here:

I recommend ensuring that OpenOffice always saves in Microsoft formats, rather than using ODF, as you'll then know that they can be opened by anyone that you might want to send them to. The first thing I always do, when installing OpenOffice onto a computer, is to change the default settings by following these simple instructions:

RTF is Rich Text Format

It is a format for transfering between different Word Processing programs.

Not what I was expecting, but I've carried out your recommendation, so fingers crossed.
