Is it possible to transfer a downloaded app from an android phone to a pc?

Probably. If you connect a cable between the two you may find the PC can read the phone as if it were a disk. But you'd need to find the downloaded file.

I'm unsure app downloads are kept anywhere, but I suspect they are run and deleted. Not that I know.

Is there a reason to have an app on a PC that can't run it ?

Cheers OG. It's all a bit beyond me I'm afraid. I know you can, supposedly, transfer them from your pc to the android, but how to do it in reverse.
My grandson has bought an OS map and with it came a D/L version for his android phone. This has made the memory on the phone quite full and he wants room for something else, hence the transfer question. I may have missed out some techy bits but I hope you get the idea.

Why does he not delete it from the phone ? It should be saved in Play Store if it was obtained from there. If it is a free app there's even less problem.

Interesting question. So it was got at a shop ? In that case where did he download it from ? Maybe it's still from the Play Store and his account there anyway. He'd need to check.

Yes he got it from a shop (large chain) but I have no idea where he would've downloaded it from. I'll pass on all you say later.

I can understand why he might want to remove it from the phone, but what is the purpose of transferring it to the PC?

Hi TheChair. I really don't know. I'm just asking the things he was asking his mum last night. I might be wrong but I'm assuming he wants to keep it for one reason or another and have the space on his phone for something else.

If his phone has a slot for an SD card, it might be worth putting one in the phone. He could then transfer things like photos to the card, possibly along with the map, which would free up some of the phone's built in memory.

When you purchase an OS map nowadays, there is a scratch-off panel on the inside front cover. Scratching off the panel reveals a printed code. You are meant to make sure that the panel is intact before purchasing the map because a scratched off panel may indicate that the code has been used by someone else. All codes are usable only once.

You then go to a specific Ordnance Survey website on your device be it a tablet, phone or PC and enter the code. You create an account and enter the code on your device. If the code is accepted, OS download a digital copy of your map to the device. Note that the download is the exact map that you purchased and you are not provided with an option to download any other OS map.

The whole thing is nothing to do with the Play Store. It's strictly a service offered by the Ordnance Survey. Yes, the digital download does take up quite a bit of space but there's no way around this apart from clearing space on your device. It's definitely possible to download to a PC or laptop but the idea is that that the digital version is portable - lugging a laptop up Snowdonia is a no-no!

It's not classed as a free app as you've paid for the paper map. The purchase just entitles you to use the app if you wish.

I have discovered one problem with the whole idea though which I'll complain to OS about when I get a minute. I bought a paper copy of the Explorer Snowdonia map for a trip there last week and duly downloaded the app to my phone. The following day, I was given an identical map with the scratch panel intact. Now if I scratch off the secon maps panel and enter the code, it will download an identical map to the one I already have on my phone. I think this is unfair and potentially useless under these circumstances. Someone purchased the second map after all and an alternative map should be selectable.

Mobile phones tend to be unreasonably restricted, as I found out when I bought a memory card for my first "smart" phone and afterwards was informed I could not move apps to it, only data (maybe). Totally unacceptable. Only partially sorted on my latest phone when the warranty ran out and I rooted the beast.

It is possible you may be able to move the map data to a card and the app still work, but I don't know how. Maybe the Net will tell you.
