Windows 10
I'm trying to resolve a slow running problem and the various sites tell me to
Go to the Start menu and type......
But I don't have a box there to type into.
I have also come across references to alternative power off options, again I can't see that either.
I'm probably being very stupid so don't laugh but can anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

Choose the little setting key that pops up bottom left that looks like a little cog. When you hover your pointer over it, it will say settings. Click the settings wheel/cog and a menu opens up and lists System, Devices, Updates and security , Accounts etc. You will see a dialogue box in at the top of that menupag
This is unintuitive, but you don't need a box to type into (or you don't need to see it). Just hit the Windows/menu button, typically to left of left Alt key and start typing. The menu will then show you options that relate to what you have typed.
This is how Cortana, the digital agent, works. If you right click on your task bar on your desk top, there are options for how to display it (technically her...). Though you don't need to see it, if you don't want to.
