Windows 7 Search Function

Good morning everyone!
I am sorry to be a PITA, but I am running Windows 7 on my laptop, and the Search function has ceased to function. As I am an octogenarian Luddite, I suspect that I have done something stupid. Please can anyone help? Many thanks in advance!

It could be a problem with search indexing so it may be worth rebuilding it
Go to "Control Panel" "indexing options" "Advanced" then click on "Rebuild"
It will take some time to complete
