How To Hold The Volume Of Beer?
29 Answers
So I got this strange deal. I can tolerate the alcohol very good, however my problem is that I just can’t drink enough because my stomach is full fairly quickly, which stops me from drinking more.
You guys have some tips how I can hold more volume?

The problem with this I have found, although not to the extremes of Barley Wine, is that I drink stronger beers (5% +) at the same speed as session beers of 3.6% so actually get drunker quicker :-(
“his favorite was Barleywine at 12% alcohol but in a 1/3d pint bottle. One bottle has as much alcohol as 3 pints of ordinary beer.”
Back to school for you, Eddie (and Fitzer). 1/3 pint of Barley Wine at 12% is equivalent (in alcohol) to one pint of ordinary beer at 4% ABV. You’re out by a factor of three!
A third of a pint (190ml) of liquid which has an ABV of 12% contains 22.7ml of alcohol. A pint (568ml) of liquid which has an ABV of 4% contains exactly the same – 22.7ml of alcohol (plus or minus a fraction for rounding). You would have to drink a pint of Barley Wine at 12% to consume the same amount of alcohol as three pints of beer at 4%.
Barley wine is still manufactured by some of the small brewers. Back in the day Watney's "Stingo" and Whitbread "Gold Label" were stocked in most pubs. These are no longer produced (thank God in the case of Watney's). But as you say, OG, a request for Barley Wine today in most places would be met with a blank look.
Barley wine... brings back memories. I've always like a drink but could never stomach that. Years ago when I worked in pubs there were always a few old-timers in at 11am who drank it.
Poip, the more you drink the more your stomach will stretch, so you could do that, but I'm not sure it's a good thing to do. If you're determined to fit more alcohol in you'll have to go for wine or spirits, but remember to slow down a bit.
