As a test, put your Windows XP CD into the CD drive and restart your PC.
Does it do anything differently? It may ask if you want to reisntall or repair your operating system.
If not, then you can make one change and prompt it to. Basically "boot from CD" means that instead of loading Windows from the version saved and installed on your PC already, it's read directly from the CD.
If necessary, press the "Delete" key near the keypad as your computer boots.
You should then see this screen (choose the highlighted option) and then something akin to this one - change the first boot device to "CDROM" and reboot your PC while the Windows CD is in the CD drive.
Once you're completely finished reinstalling everything, I'd change this first boot device back to HDD (or whatever it was before).
