I have these:

I previously had a pair of JVC which were a bit cheaper, but less good.
I tend to use them on long flights; rail journeys and more occasionally for use in a room where other people are watching TV and I want to listen tosomething on the computer.
The Sony ones are very effective. That is to say, with the noise-cancelling, you literally cannot hear anything apart from the music coming through the headphones.
You could argue that is a bad thing, because if people talk to you, you tend to ignore them. On the other hand, it is kind of the point of these headphones.
The other main benefit is that these are big over-ear things, whereas the JVC ones are on-ear, which is smaller, but less comfortable over long periods.
A third benefit of the Sony ones is the battery ife and the fact that there is a rechargable battery on-board, so you don't have the fiddly job of replacing batteries.
The sound quality is also very good.
For me, the comfort is probably the biggest factor.
