Hdmi Or Vga

My DVD player has several output options. HDMI is one, and from there straight into the TV's HDMI.

The TV also has VGA input. Could I go HDMI to VGA, from my Panasonic DVD player to my Toshiba TV?

Is it a case of suck it and see, and shouldn't I bother!

HDMI is more recent so I'd be inclined to use that. Unless you discover otherwise.

Why would you want to do that? The VGA input is for connecting older computers and laptops. It does not include an audio signal.

VGA won't be HD, so lower quality. If you're only using it as a monitor that won't matter.

HDMI covers a range of screen sizes, the latest standard goes up to the 4K standard, earlier ones managed only 1080p and 1080i modes and below. HDMI is adaptive to the screen to which it is sending image data.

HDMI also carries sound data.

To answer your question, yes, unless you have high definition screen, in which case the picture will show, but at a lower resolution than the screen is capable of

Check the resolution of your screen, and that the cable will give the required resolution before buying.

I'm pretty sure the VGA Sub-D connector is limited to 1680x1050, which is slightly worse than than 1080p or 1080i (1920×1080). but not as good as 4K.

To be honest, you probably would not notice the difference in image quality, but it's best to give you the full answer, rather than simply saying, "yes, it will be fine"

Thanks all, and I think 'suck it and see' still sounds favourite.

I want to use a small Panasonic DVD player to play SOUND-ONLY DVDs. I know, but you can buy them - they were/are a way of bunging a huge amount of (for example) talking books onto a disc, hours and hours at a time, whereas you can only put a single hour onto most CDs.

Trouble is, you can only play the resulting disc on a DVD player. So what I'm doing is wiring it up so that the sound comes through my amp, and the 'image' (needed to see what you're actually playing!) goes to a small TV.

Sounds fiddlier than it is.
