Thanks to you both. Afraid you are dealing with an ancient numpty here so please be patient !
I've got all the settings needed to set up my email with, say, Thunderbird ( port numbers etc), so am I correct in assuming that if I navigate through all the inerrogation I will retain my ntl.com address ? And will the backlog of emails that built up while my pc was being upgraded come flooding through ?
Treat me gently !
Cheers.

Backstory first:-
I used to have Microsoft Office 2003 Outlook as my email client until a Windows update completely borked it and Microsoft wasn't interested in fixing it. I have quite a few emails either coming or going and use 4 email addresses myself (don't ask and no I'm not a scammer).
Someone suggested I try Thunderbird and I believe Buenchico likes it. So, I installed it for a 'trial run'. Once you start adding an email address it will find all the settings it needs to connect, all you need to add is your password. I have an ntlworld email account as well.
Any emails under your account will be retrieved including those left on the ntlworld server under your name. If your WLMail was set up to delete emails once downloaded previously then unfortunately they are probably gone.
I've used it now for about six months with no issues whatsoever, even though I found the answer to get Office 2003 Outlook to work again. Thunderbird is easier and is always kept up to date.
Go on, try it, nothing to lose ☺☺☺

Thanks Alice, that was easy !
Thunderbird installed and I've made a £10 donation. My emails are through but I can't get rid of the large Thunderbird panel at the bottom of the page. Also, as my Bing problem persists I dont have any icons on screen so can't find the Thunderbird one !
And I thought this was going to be a quiet Sunday morning.
Thanks again.

I'm assuming you mean a shortcut to Thunderbird?
In the search bar next to the Windows icon type thunderbird.exe press enter. In the search results click Open File location. In the Folder that opens you should see a file called Thunderbird.exe
Right click on the file and select 'Send to' and then 'Create shortcut (desktop)' Then close down the windows
