Have just moved from a basic phone to a new Sony Xperia Compact and think I have managed from the 80 pages of the manual to set most of it up! However there are a couple of things I cannot find:

1. I have found my contacts all listed in Google the same as on my laptop and I have set up Google (and GMail which is working ok) on this new phone) but when I click on the phone icon to make a call I can not find the contacts there - only a list of email addresses! I think thee should be my contacts list on that page similar to my Tablet and clicking on one should automatically allow me to phone it?

2. On my basic phone I had downloaded my own ringtone for when I get a call. There is a list on this phone to choose from but how do I get my own ringtone added to this list?

3. Have managed to put in my sim from old phone correctly I presume as I can now make and receive calls? Top left of phone is a letter G with to the left of it is a small circle like a set up icon with two little arrows. Is this to show my Vodafone sim is working correctly and if so do I leave the wifi button to 'On' all the time whether in my house or away? There are two other icons at top of screen next to my battery level - one is a triangle on it's side and the other like an inverted triangle which flashes occasionally. Is one of these the signal?

Thanks everyone

Based upon using my own (Alcatel) phone: 1. If go to 'Contacts', rather than the phone icon, when you want to make a call, you can select the contact you want and then press the 'call' button. Alternatively, if you do select the phone icon, type part of the person's name in the 'number' field and you'll be offered a list of all matching contacts to select from. 2....

Based upon using my own (Alcatel) phone:

1. If go to 'Contacts', rather than the phone icon, when you want to make a call, you can select the contact you want and then press the 'call' button.

Alternatively, if you do select the phone icon, type part of the person's name in the 'number' field and you'll be offered a list of all matching contacts to select from.

2. Purpose-made ringtones are now largely a thing of the past. That's because smartphones can usually use any MP3 file that's within it's 'Music' folder as its ring tone. Put an MP3 file of your choosing in the 'Music' folder and then, when selecting a ringtone, look for 'Other' (or something similar). That should then provide you with the option to select the file you want from your 'Music' folder.

3. I'm not sure about the icons you're seeing but, in general, you can leave the 'wifi' function turned on most of the time. (The only exception might be where you've used a pub or store's wi-fi in the past but, for some reason, your phone can't reconnect when you visit there again. You'll then need to turn the wifi off to persuade your phone to use the 3G/4G/5G network that it connects to when you're outdoors).

Thanks Buenchico - can always rely on you for a quick response!
That all worked. Actually I found a little contacts icon once I clicked the phone. Also found how to text which I forgot to ask you!
