Printer Inks

Hi. Looking for replacement ink cartridges for my Canon printer. Disgusted to find that a brand new printer with ink cartridges is only five pounds more. Have ordered a new one but will use only the cartridges and put the printer for later. No wonder landfill sites are full of disgarded technology.

I made the mistake of buying a Canon printer but it was during lockdown. Never again, as you say the inks are so expensive even the compatible ones.

It's getting harder these days to find cheap compatible cartridges but it's always been better (possibly counter-intuitively) to buy a printer that use separate cartridges for each colour, meaning that the printer will use 4, 5 or even 6 cartridges instead of just two. They tend to work out far cheaper to run. (e.g. a full set of 5 cartridges for my old Canon printer currently costs £12.22 from my favourite supplier, while a similar set for the Canon printer I've got now costs £16.32, with discounts for quantity available in both cases).

If you tell us which printer you're using, we might be able to point you towards some cheaper inks.

Hi Buenchico. I have a Canon Pixma MG3600 which uses PG-540XL and CL-541XL. I have just bought another printer (same one) and will use the inks only and put the printer aside until my old one fails.

The inks in a new printer are generally not full size.

Unless you are doing photography use compatible cartridges and compatible paper. They can still be bought at places like stinkyink reasonably.

If you do use a printer for serious photography buy two printers, one for photography loaded with proprietary ink and paper and the other as above. That's what I do.

I can't find any significantly lower prices anywhere though. (Some prices initially appear to look lower but they don't include VAT and/or carriage. So they don't actually work out any cheaper).

As I stated above, cartridges for printers that only take two of them (rather than, say, the five that my own printer uses) nearly always end up costing more in the long run.

I once bought Wilkinson own brand for my HP. What a waste of time. Despite Wilkos stating their inks are compatible with most printers nothing goes like that!

I only use compatibles, too. I agree that new printers come with 'sample' size ink cartridges
