Our "smart" gas meter screen is showing blank.
We've pressed and held button A for aaaaages as this is meant to wake it up.
I'm assuming that the battery has gone, but my question is will the gas usage still be being measured somehow, or are we going to end up with an estimate for our usage??

I suspect you will have to wait for your next bill to find out.
If your suppler has an on line chat option you could try asking the question.
Do you mean the meter that the gas goes into or the inhome display?

The meter that's outside encased in a box.
You normally press the A button to wake it up and display the reading, but nothing's happening. I'm assuming the battery has gone, but I'm wondering if the gas usage is still being measured??
Have you got an in home display or can you see your hourly / daily usage online? If so, have a look and see if it is showing your usage.

Otherwise contact the supplier
Yet another reason (as if one were needed) for NOT getting a smart meter
I don't agree, goalie, it took a lot of stress over two years to get my horrendous bills sorted because my old, dumb meter had gone haywire.
I am still out of pocket

Since we've had the "smart" meter, we've had nothing but problems with it connecting to the gas meter. It reads the electric meter fine and tells us our daily usage etc .... but it has had endless problems trying to "see" the gas meter. The gas meter reading was fine before, so the two issues aren't really connected.
I'm all for technology ..... when it works ..... but I can't really see the benefit from having a "smart" meter. We always used to send our meter readings in on the first of every month and never had problems before now. Anyway, that's a topic of discussion for a new thread ..... so please try not to stray too far off topic :)
I was not straying off topic, if you can see today's gas usage either on the IHD, on the website or the app then you know the gas meter is still 'talking' to the supplier, your usage is still being measured and the readings are being sent as they should be

Sorry, that wasn't aimed at you, or anyone else.
I made that point, as I mentioned that I couldn't really see the point of smart meters ..... people might be tempted to start discussing the pros and cons of smart meters, rather than staying on topic.
Our smart meter has never seen the gas meter.
British Gas don't care.
It's only the in home display by the sound of it, the meter itself is what sends the readings, just means you can't keep track of what you are spending.
That's a very smart meter - sending readings to the Gas Board but keeping them secret from you. If I were you I would be prepared for a shock when you get the bill.

P.S. I was working for an energy company when the Smart Meter rollout started and having seen the enormous number of problems encountered I wouldn't have one at any cost. The technology is rubbish.

No .... it's the outside meter.
Usually we open the cupboard in which it's located and press the A button and it would display the gas reading. However, pressing the A button does nothing now - I'm guessing the battery needs replacing.
Who is your provider? I've checked a few websites and they all say the same thing: if your meter display is blank and pressing the button on the meter (if present) has no effect, you'll need to call us....
