Windows downloads affecting pc

I am runnig xp windows and since being asked to download a windows security file cannot connect to my windows outlook for mail, o have done a system restore and it works ok, but then windows downloads the latest file and blocks my outlook. How cam i stop windows downloading this file to my pc. Thanks

Are you set up to receive automatic updates? if so you can go to Control panel,>automatic updates and turn it off from there - all this means is that when you next want to update you do it manually and select those updates you want as opposed to the PC doing it automatically on your behalf.Iwouldsuggest doing this after you have restored the system so that outlook is working OK though.
