The Android operating system is, by design, much safer than Windows is.
Android 'sand boxes' applications, so that something nasty in one app can't spread to other apps. Windows is based around the concept of a central 'registry', where all software is centrally linked.
As has been said, only ever downloading apps from Google Play store to an Android device provides a great deal of security. Having said that though, I installed an APK file from the third party site to my new tablet only a few days ago. However
(a) it was from one of the few such sites that I trust (Softonic) ; and
(b) I don't use that tablet for banking or anything else that might present major security risks.
