Sir David thinks so and I agree. The charm of the show was partly to do with the tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. What do we think.

"However , it could have continued with them losing all the dosh through some dodgy investments forcing them back to their wheeler dealing days"
Which, of course, is exactly what was portrayed in the 2001 Christmas Special.
By that time, Buster Merryfield (Uncle Albert) had died and so there was the loss of that character for John Sullivan to deal with.
The last regular series ended in February 1991. The show was then restricted to Christmas Specials: in 1991 (a two-parter where they go to Miami and Del is mistaken for a Mafia Don), 1992 and 1993. "Time on our Hands" (the episode where they get rich) was the last of three episodes aired over Christmas in 1996.
If the series was to end (and as I said, I think it had run its course) that would have been a fitting finale. The closing sequence of that episode saw Del and Rodders stroll off into the sunset.
So I have to diagree with Sir David - I think the mistake was to bring it back with them having lost the lot.

I think the error was bringing it back for 3 more xmas specials. I think "Time on our hands" was intended to be the last episode but TV people being what they are contrived to bring it back.
