Wireless Mouse Connection

I have an HP laptop and an HP wireless mouse and am trying to get them to like each other! I can't seem to pair my mouse even though it is showing up on 'devices' on the laptop (but i can't add it on 'add devices) . Bluetooth is on, I have pressed the connect button on the mouse but it doesn't have a solid light (flashes orange three times). I've watched multiple 'how to' videos and am at the point of hurling the thing now. Can somebody help me using basic terms that this idiot can understand!

Just a guess, but do the mouse batteries need renewing?

It's brand new. I've sorted it. Don't know how but it involved lots of button pressing. Still not showing up on devices though which is odd
