This chatter about seasides and piers has jogged my memory - to a point. I can't remember where the dickens I was.

A Vistorian redbrick town north of Whitby, high on the cliffs overlooking the sea. There is a train station. A non-descript sort of town that doesn't seem to cater to the tourist. Lack of amusement arcades, bucket and spade shops, candy floss etc.

A fennicular railway descends to the glorious, long sandy beach (and ascends, too), I think there is a pier.

Name that town.

Saltburn?

saltburn?

Question Author

Hurrah!  Just had a look at Google images as yes - it is Saltburn.

Thanks both.

I don't know about DDIL, but I just googled Funiculars in the UK. There are relatively few of them so I just looked for one north of Whitby

Linton and Lynmouth came to my mind but they're down south. It's a lovely area and I can see why it's known as little Switzerland.

Been there many times years ago barry.  My father lived nearby on top of the cliffs overlooking the sea.  Beautiful.

Ditto bednobs

I love that whole coastline, ladybirder, and the countryside.  Beautiful part of the country.

Vagus, we've holidayed at Lynton (we love funicular railways).  Stayed in a nice little hotel that was later taken over by Shearings.  Glorious countryside

Barry I used to drive up there from the Midlands. I remember a very very steep hill that was famous for its difficulty.  Think you had to use 1st gear only to get up, and possibly the same coming down.  Do you know what it's called?

Question Author

I don't, sorry, my memory is not good for that sort of thing ☹️

Porlock Hill, my wife suggests

I`m not sure whether you are talking about Lynmouth or Saltburn but the steep hill out of Lynmouth is Countisbury hill.  Porlock hill is steep but goes down into Porlock.

We're are right pair then barry LOL.

Scarborough?
