Defragmentation

I have tried on several occasions to degrament my hard drive (haven't done it for about 12 months) through the maintenace wizard and seperatly. I have left it on all afternoon and I left it on all last night. I am on windows 98 SE and get an oblong box with a blue bar running diagonally across it with little fragments going into a disc like box, all I am getting is a single unit of the bar coming up with 1% complete stopping for a bit disappearing and then coming back every few minutes. That is as far as it gets, has anyone any ideas or has my windows maintanence wizard packed in on the deframentation programme, could do with it working as the computer's slowing down (I put it through AOL computer check on a regular basis and it comes defragment hard drive)

my old Windows ME pc used to do that. It used to get to about 10% and then start over again. I dont know why, but look forwrd to see if anyone knows on here.

I thought they had sorted this problem with 98SE, but it used to be best to run a defrag in "safe mode" as any computer activity would reset the whole process - turn off any screensavers and all other programs as well!

I defragged my computer only a day or so ago. I had the same trouble, hardly getting past 30%. After TEN HOURS - I realized that my anti-virus immunity was probably interfering with the procedure. After disabling the anti-virucus protection for a period, I found everything proceeded beautifully. Don't forget to scan the c drive first though before defragment. Good luck!

Do "ctrl + alt + del" end task everything except systray and explorer, disable screensaver. then defrag, this should work

Thanks everyone, cheers lemarchand I put it on safe mode and it defragemented in a few hours thanks again everyone
