USB 1 or 2?

I have USB 2.0 on my computer but when I plug a USB 2.0 device into my PC Windows XP tells me that "This usb device can perform faster if you connect it to a high speed usb 2.0 port. For a list of available ports click here". I have tried all the USB ports on the PC and I still get this pop up. How can I get my PC to run USB 2.0 hardware at USB 2.0 speeds?

have you reformatted recently or changed your motherboard.it could be that you have xp generic drivers for your motherboard installed,so you could try inserting the installation cd that came with your motherboard and reinstalling the drivers.

Do you know how to call up Device Manager from My Computer and Properties, or Control Panel and System?

Find the usb devices and uninstall/delete them. Restart your computer and let windows find the usb again. Maybe it will solve that.

PS. Before you uninstall, check to see if one of the entries mentions 'enhanced' - that's usb 2.0, if not, you've only got usb 1.0

have you got service pack 2 ? I had this very problem until I got a legal copy with service pack 2 as it was impossible to instal the SP on my old version

I have not changed anything recently, I have a legal copy of XP with SP2 installed and the "enhanced" entry is on the device manager confirming that I have USB 2.0. The only missing piece of the jigsaw is that the USB 2 .0 sockets, according to the motherboard handbook, are the 2 that connect to the front facing sockets on the case. I presume it is possible that the case wiring does not support USB 2.0?

You say that you have tried all the usb ports - I assume that means you've tried the ones on the rear? That would rule out your wiring to the front. I would still uninstall the ports - it won't do any harm. I had to do that after installing SP2 - the usb ports wouldn't work at all until I did!!

Okay, done that...still the same message! When I click on the message it even shows me that I have free USB 2.0 ports available...8 unused ports on the usb root hub from the Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller!...Strange but true!

I've really read alot on this problem now; I feel as if I've reached a higher level of conciousness :o)

Most of the problems listed should have been solved with XP SP2 and having re-installed drivers and bios I am at a loss as to what to do next!

The only thing that I can do is go buy a USB 2 PCI card...I suppose it is possible that the motherboard is faulty when it comes to USB 2.0!

I am now the proud owner of a Belkin Hi speed USB 5 port PCI card...and guess what?...still does not work! It just seems like the XP will only link my usb devices to usb 1 and takes great delight in telling me that they can run faster, XP even shows all the usb ports available to me even though some of those ports must be taken up by other usb peripherals (all-be-it running at usb 1 speed). Appears to be lots of people out there with this problem!

If hardware's been thoroughly taken account of, then I'd keep on yellowjohn's route and look at drivers. You didn't say whether or not you'd tried downloading the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard from its manufacturer's webiste... I would say that this is currently your best bet. Has to be a driver problem I'd say.

Metro, none of us have mention an upgrade to your Bios?

Bios is up to date and so are all the drivers I've even tried allowing windows to re-install the drivers for the enhanced usb controllers (which have also been updated!). The only thing left to do is to re-install windows XP (does the P stand for pain?)....but I think I'll rather just do without USB 2 and just go for a clean install when I really need it.
