Is it as simple as plugging in another CPU chip into the available slot on the motherboard?

RTFM applies here. It will depend on the motherboard. I would hazard a guess and say plugging it in then changing a BIOS setting would be the order of the day.

If you have the model of your computer (Dell, Time, Tiny, HP etc), you should be able to download the manual for the motherboard from their support site.

Really? OK. I'll have a look into that when i get home, assuming time still have a website after they went bust. I'll find something somewhere

Just a quick addendum. You'll also need an operating system that supports dual processors. XP Home Edition doesn't. You'll need XP Pro.
